Alison Arroway takes a lickin’ and keeps on tickin’. She has to, or she won’t get paid. Alison is a stunt double for pampered teen actress Pomegranate and when the director takes the shoot to Portugal, Alison is anything but thrilled to be rooming with Pom. But getting to hang around teen hearthrob Erik? Now that’s a plus.
Erik invites both girls on a sunset boat trip and Alison manages to have a decent time. Until the storm hits and the boat is shipwrecked on a small island, leaving Erik missing and the boat captain dead.
In the morning light, Alison and Pom find themselves on the lost island of Atlantis. Only one problem now that the girls know the secret of the island, the Atlanteans don’t want them to leave. They're stuck with corsets, full-skirted dresses, and the strange steam-driven contraptions that are just a way of life for the islanders.
When a plot by the ruthless army Captain to take over the island and declare himself General over all emerges, an underground group promises to return the girls to the mainland if they can help stop him. They'll go through a mountain, literally, to find the Book of Blue, a book that will explain how to make ‘the stars fall sideways' in order to save the day and earn their freedom.

Some reads are just meant for vacations or travelling: fast paced, straight-to-the-action tales that whip readers along from beat to beat just as quickly as the readers themselves are taken from airport to airport, city to city, or hotel to beach, book (or e-reader!) in hand. The Stars Fell Sideways by Cassandra Marshall is just such a read, a story that looks to transport a reader from her own life to distant lands on a wild adventure. The Stars Fell Sideways actually pulls this trick off twice, as we meet our hero, Alison Arroway, a teen stunt double from a family of stunt doubles, who fills in regularly for Pomegranate "Pom" Posy, one of America's hottest teen movie stars. This in itself is a fascinating world in which to be dropped, full of sycophants, fans, commercial shoots, limos, and even teen heartthrob, Erik (#3 on People's Hottest Stars under 25 no less.) But for Alison, whose face is never seen on camera and whose deeds are always credited to Pom, life in this world is just short of glamorous; on the fringes of a dream life, close enough to be near fame and fortune (and especially boys like Erik) but not quite as close as Alison would hope.
Whisked away to a film shoot in Portugal with Pom and Erik, Alison is thrilled to be invited on an evening Yacht trip with the two stars. But in an unexpected and violent storm that tears the yacht apart on the open seas, Alison is plunged into a world even more bizarre and dangerous than stunt work in Hollywood: the lost city of Atlantis.
It is here that Ms. Marshall adds a nice twist to the Atlantean myth. As opposed to the traditional, ivory-white towers and pseudo-Greek/Roman influences, this Atlantis has reached a Victorian-era, Steampunk period, full of hydro and wind-powered electricity, locomotive conveyances, top hats, and corsets. And of course, Alison and her friends also find themselves in the middle of a power struggle between two authorities bent on control of Atlantis's future, and on a race in search of a lost piece of Atlantean knowledge called the Book of Blue, which, according to legend, can unlock the secret to an event that will cause the "stars to fall sideways" and return Atlantis to the glorious peak of it's civilization.
The adventure beats flow fast and furious in this book, with Alison meeting new allies (including the sweet Betsy and a young Atlantean looker named Corben) and also creepy villains, all the while discovering Jules Vernesque technologies and even undertaking some Lora Croft-like explorations beneath the caverns of Atlantis, where ancient drawings and great machines lay dormant, awaiting the fulfillment of their long-forgotten purposes. But above all else, what may stand out sharpest to the intended audience are Alison's heated moments with both Erik and Corben, which will probably get young readers' pulses racing pretty quickly.
This is not a story with the most intricately laid plot or tedious character profiles. It is a blisteringly paced romp loaded end to end with escapes, falls, discoveries, flirtations, romance, derring-do, and a satisfyingly epic conclusion that indeed sees the stars fall sideways. So if you have a vacation or trip upcoming, and you're looking to escape for a few hours on a wild ride (or perhaps just to add a little teen-romance or some Steampunk-light to your reading list) The Stars Fell Sideways may be just what you're looking for.

The Stars Fell Sideways eBook Cassandra Marshall Reviews
"The Stars Fell Sideways" is an interesting exploration of what happened to Atlantis. Alison, Erik, and Pom are ship-wrecked and appear on the mysterious island. They have to figure out a way home, seeing as they are not comfortable living with these odd people. Alison is determined not to conform to the standards of the Atlantis people. She's a rough character, having grown up with her dad and as a stunt double, people don't exactly treat her with ice cream and candy.
I enjoyed the book and stayed up late finishing it one night. I was a bit disappointed with the ending. It seemed almost abrupt and a little rushed. Yes, the characters wanted to go home, but it needed a little more resolution. The slight romance between Alison and Corben felt a little forced and sudden, but it didn't have a clear resolution since they never really said anything about it, except for the one time they made-out and tried to undress each other. I had a little trouble finding Alison likeable, but she is a strong character. There was a twist with Erik which didn't seem right for the way he was depicted, but oh well.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. I just felt it could have used a little something more. I do recommend the book to others looking for a different take on the lost city of Atlantis.
Cassandra Marshall's The Stars Fell Sideways took me on a fun, unexpected journey into the world of Atlantis. An Atlantean world that Marshall has infused with refreshing originality and totally made her own!
When teenager stunt gal extraordinaire Alison Arroway heads to Portugal to work on a movie as the stunt double for famous teen actress Pomegranate she's excited for the stunts, to maybe spend time with heart-throb Eric, and to see the sights. She's less thrilled about spending time with spoiled, nasty Pom. But when Eric invites Alison and Pom on a boat cruise and the boat wrecks during a storm and Eric goes missing, Alison and Pom end up stranded together on the infamous island of Atlantis. And once the girls are there, the Atlantean people won't let them leave. So the girls are stuck in an old-fashioned world, run by steam-driven machines, but a hostile takeover and rebellion army may be their ticket back home. If they can survive "the stars falling sideways" that is.
At a little over 200 pages, The Stars Fell Sideways is a quick, but super fun and cute read. Marshall has weaved an exciting steampunkish fantasy tale full of humor, action, and romance that will appeal to a wide audience.
The Atlantean world in The Stars Fell Sideways is an unexpected one, but in a totally good way. Marshall has crafted a refreshingly unique and captivating Atlantis that is more steampunk Victorian England than full on mythical fantasy, but completely charming. The world-building in The Stars Fell Sideways is excellent and the Atlantis Alison and Pom find themselves in has great historical, social, and cultural layers, combining together to create an endlessly fascinating and believable world, that is both delightful and dark. I love the mix of steampunk and fantasy and both elements are used in imaginative and dazzling ways.
The journey Alison embarks on in Atlantis is full of thrills, chills, action, twists, turns, and smooches. I had a lot of fun falling into this story, exploring the world of Atlantis with Alison and Pom as they are given jobs, make new friends, and set out to find the legendary Blue Book and learn how to make the stars fall sideways. The romantic elements are really cute and, at times, even unexpectedly and enticingly hot and steamy.
Alison is an awesome heroine; from her bad-ass stunt skills to her feisty take charge attitude and wit, she's very amusing and entertaining. I love how she uses movie references to describe her settings and feelings. Pomegranate is, at first, a stereotypically egotistical and mean girl, but she really grew on me with her outrageous observations and laugh-out-loud humor. These two girls make an odd, quirky pair, but their eventual friendship is sweet and cute.
The book ends on a satisfying note, but definitely left me wanting more and I really hope there's a sequel!
MY FINAL THOUGHTS The Stars Fell Sideways sparkles with fun originality. Marshall weaves an exciting tale with a fresh take on Atlantis and an awesome mix of steampunk and fantasy. I greatly enjoyed this book and think other YA fans will too. I definitely recommend it!
I found CA Marshall's debut novel to be a fun read, and believe other readers will enjoy the intriguing concept.
